Air pollution is not a just a big city problem, it is an everybody problem and not just outdoor pollution either. There are just as many things (maybe even MORE) polluting your indoor air as there are polluting your outdoor air. If you have children or pets or children AND pets, well, bless your heart, we are fully polluted together.
The air inside your home can be polluted by the chemicals you spray to clean your home, perfumes, lead, fire-retardants and the list goes on and on. If you have kids, all sorts of yucky things from babies’ dirty diapers to stinky teenagers and their super stinky shoes pollute the air you are breathing. I don’t know why teenage boys stink so badly, but for the love, I am about to ban any and all clothing and shoes from entering my home. They will have to bathe, change clothes and put the stinky clothes occupying their stinky body in the wash before they are allowed entry into the home. Perhaps if I padlock the fridge they will remember to turn the washing machine on, but I doubt it.
So, other than having people undress outside which, on second thought, may have my neighbors calling the authorities what can we do to breathe better inside…
- Bring in some plants – plants are great because they are natural air cleaners. I realize for some they create a whole other set of problems for those that have animals that may use them for inappropriate things, but in general they are an excellent addition to your home. Garden Mums, Peace Lily plants and Spider plants are all great ones to beginners; they are low maintenance and superb air cleaners.
- Repair Leaks – any kind of leak leads to dampness which leads to mold and mildew which is no good to breathe so repair whatever type you leak you have whether it is from plumbing problems or roof leaks or just a damp basement get it straightened out so you can breathe better.
- Keep your floors clean, especially if you have carpet – it would be very hard to have a home with no carpet, rugs of any kind or upholstered furniture but these are the very kinds of fibers where unhealthy particles and chemicals can become trapped. Just keep them as clean as you can and perhaps you can encourage the people in your home to leave their shoes outside so they do not track in any of those unwanted particles.
- Have a Whole-Home Air Purifier installed – this is a great way to effectively kill harmful bacteria, mold, and viruses and reduce odors, smoke, etc. by 99 percent.
