Spring is officially here, which means warmer weather, beautiful flowers and pollen. I have an enormous dislike for pollen. I think my reaction to it gets worse every year. Here’s the kicker – plants with bright pretty flowers like roses rarely trigger any allergy-related reactions; it is the tiny “dry” pollens from grass, trees and weeds that send us over the edge. Even if you have a weed-free, tree-free, grass-free yard, you can still have a reaction because every single little grain can travel more than 100 miles in the wind from its original source. Lovely. Wouldn’t it be nice if something helpful could travel that far all by itself- like money? I would take that trade out in a heartbeat!
Even better is that each one of the pollen-offenders pollinates at a different time of the year. Trees pollinate first during the spring, then grasses from late spring to early summer and finally weeds pollinate late summer to early fall. So, just as you get over one thing you may end up with a separate reaction to something else.
The best thing to do to get relief and to hopefully not get sick at all is start taking allergy medicine before you get sick. Really, before you even see the first hint that it is pollen time, but if you are late to the game, just start taking it now. In our body, we have chemicals called histamines that cause all the runny noses, sneezing, itching and swelling associated with allergic reactions. That’s why we need to take antihistamines as soon as possible. They block our histamines and prevent an allergic reaction.
Antihistamines will not take away your current allergy symptoms. They will only block future symptoms. You can have allergy type symptoms year round, but springtime is definitely the worst offender. We can get completely overloaded with all of the different pollinating items. Nasal irrigation (i.e. a saline rinse) is also supposed to work wonders for relief this time of year, but I have yet to try it.
We can’t help you with your allergy troubles, but Carmine’s can help you with all of your heating, plumbing and air conditioning needs. Give us a call today at 203-791-8089 and if you suffer from allergies remember to start taking antihistamines BEFORE the pollen hits.
