Are you considering having work done around your home? Whether you are considering a major kitchen or bath redo or just some small updates, you want to make sure you are working with a trustworthy contractor. So many people pay their contractor and then never see them again leaving much of the house in disarray, but there are several things you can do to protect yourself.
Ways to Protect Yourself and Your Home:
Make sure the contractor you select has a current license.
Look the contractor up on the Better Business Bureau’s website. Look not only for their rating, but also how the contractor handles issues that arise after the project is complete.
Ask for references, not only from a prospective contractor, but also from your friends and family. Someone will have had dealings with a contractor either good or bad and that is important information to have. Also, if you are on Facebook or other social media ask for references there. People who have had good experiences will be happy to share them with you, maybe suggest if someone has something negative to say about a particular contractor they private message you about it, just to cut down on any bashing that may occur.
Get a detailed signed contract and ask a lot of questions. Remember this person (and their people) will be in your home. If you are not 100% comfortable with them you need to find someone else.
