Well, that’s a wrap on the holidays for awhile. The last of the fireworks have been shot, there are plenty of left-overs in the fridge, a good time was had by all and now it is time to recover. There is nothing but the stifling heat of summer going on for the next two months…except possibly a hurricane.
Hurricane Season is actually considered to be from June 1 to November 30, with an average of 12 named storms a year and 3 of them being large hurricanes that may make landfall. Most everyone is aware by now of the things that need to be packed up, secured, and stored in case of potentially dangerous weather, but do you know how to secure your air conditioner unit? That’s right; you can make it safe too.
I am not saying a hurricane is on its way, if it is, I don’t know about it. These are just some helpful tips since we are here…in Hurricane Season.
Securing your air conditioner during high winds:
- In order to avoid damage from power surges turn your unit off both at the thermostat and the circuit breaker
- Use hurricane straps to secure your unit and tighten the bolts that hold the unit in place on the base
- Make sure anything (that you have control over) cannot turn into a projectile during high winds and strike the unit.
Another very important thing to do is to check the unit carefully before turning it back on after the storm. If you think there is even a slight chance it may be damaged or are unsure altogether call a professional to evaluate and service the unit.
As always Carmine’s is happy to assist you with any of your plumbing, heating and cooling needs. We realize you shouldn’t need much “heating assistance” this time of year, but still if you do please give us a call at 203-791-8089.
