With Halloween being tonight it is important to take some time to focus on Halloween safety. As you know, there will be trick or treaters – or as my little one says, “tricky treats”- so if you are a house that is candy friendly you may need to do a little prep work first.
Make sure your outside lights work, this is important for two reasons – first, it lets the kids know that you have candy you are willing to share and secondly, it ensures they can see where they are walking and, hopefully, will not fall on your property.
Keep candles away from the front door and pathway – make sure little ones cannot burn themselves or set their costumes on fire by your creative and cool Halloween decorations. One would hope children (both little and big) would know better than to touch a flame, but honestly their little (& big) minds sometimes fail them and they do things they know they really shouldn’t do. Save yourself some trouble and keep live flames away.
Try to keep yard debris out of the way. You don’t want kids leaping over tree limbs or running through big piles of leaves. Kids will be silly anyway – give them a clear path to do that. Face down mummies and Dracula’s are no good.
If you are having an adult party at the same time trick or treaters will be making their rounds try to have a person whose one and only job is to hand out candy. Don’t leave the little ones waiting forever and most certainly keep the spiced drinks out of arms reach. The candy job is great for some “middle-age” pre-teen who is too old to trick or treat and too young to party. They are pretty much miserable anyway.
Most of all have fun and let the kids have fun. You were young once too and free candy is AWESOME!
