What’s in a noise? A lot, actually. If your air conditioner is still cooling your home, but making a noise that is definitely not in the norm, don’t ignore it! You must deal with it or the problem will only get worse. Different noises mean different things so let’s have a quick lesson in “name that sound”…
Harsh Humming or Rattling
Fans making a rattling or harsh humming sound may be loose or just need a good cleaning. Check to make sure there is no debris around the fan, if there is remove it. Then check to see if the fan itself is loose – if it is just tighten it with a screwdriver or allen wrench. After that, make sure all the blades are straight, if one is bent even slightly, it could be touching the inside of unit and making a loud noise. You can straighten the blade by hand, but be gentle and precise when touching them.
Humming or Grinding
This usually means the motor needs lubrication. Some units come with unsealed motors so you will apply lubrication in the form of SAE 10 oil placed in the oil ports. You can prevent this noise from occurring by oiling the air conditioner motor at the beginning of each spring/summer.
Another problem that could cause humming is coil fins that are clogged with dirt or are bent. You can clean them with a vacuum cleaner and the brush attachment. If the coil fins are bent, you will need a special tool called the fin coil to straighten them out.
A loud rattling noise is a good indication of loose screws. When an air conditioner is running, it is vibrating. All of the vibrating loosens screws both inside the unit and on the outside holding the unit in place. This is a simple fix of just tightening all the screws with your screwdriver.
