Don’t you just love the sound of running water? I do. Although, I typically don’t give much thought to it until I have an experience where there is not any. It is absolutely an incredible pain to not have running water in our homes and we need to remember that when we have to deal with something else that is an incredible pain – water leaks.
Water leaks are tricky because you can have one for awhile before you notice it. Not only can they be expensive to repair, but there is usually some other type of damage that needs to be repaired as well like warped wood floors, soaked carpet, or wet, drippy dry wall. All of those things are no fun to deal with and usually leave homeowners feeling quite grumpy.
There are a few things that will tip you off and hopefully keep the water damage to a minimum:
High Water Bills
Remember how I said the damage from a water leak can be expensive to repair? Well, so can the utility bill that comes along with the leak. If you open your water and sewer bill and the number is way out of the ordinary you definitely have a problem somewhere that you need to resolve immediately. All utility bills fluctuate, so keep that in mind if you have been watering your lawn an extra amount this summer, that could be the reason it has increased, but if you are not using any more water than usual call a professional immediately.
Running Water Meter
If you are not sure whether your increased bill is due to extra water usage or a leak, turn off all water systems in your home and then check your water meter. If it is still running, although no water is turned on, then you definitely have a leak.
Drop in Water Pressure
Water pressure can be a touchy subject for a lot of us, especially when there is not enough of it, but if you notice a sudden drop in pressure. Turn off all water to your home immediately. You may have a pipe that has ruptured and you need to call a professional right away.
Strange Noises or Smells
All homes have their own smells and random noises, but if you hear water running when no one should have any water turned on, it’s probably not a ghost – it’s probably a leak. While every home has a unique smell, it should never be a foul odor around drains or the sewer line. If there is one, this is not a problem you can fix on your own and you really need to call a professional for assistance.
