What’s the deal with ducts? Not, ducks – like “quack, quack”, but air ducts that run throughout your home. I’ve been asked a lot lately, if they really need to be cleaned and repaired or if that is just something companies have come up with to make more money. Well, here is the truth – YES– they need to be cleaned and they need to be inspected and repaired if any leaks are found.
Cleaning: Air duct cleaning should be done every 3 to 5 years. Just think of all things that build up around your house that can see like pet hair, dust, dander, mold, etc. Well, ALL of those things are also building up in your ducts and when air flows through them it stirs them all up again. I had a lady ask me why her furniture was covered with dust just an hour or so after she cleaned….I suggested she have her ducts cleaned.
Beware of the creepy meter….know what else could be in your ducts – creatures, like spiders and mice. I would really rather they not live in my air ducts, but that may just be me.
Inspected and Repaired: If your air ducts are not sealed properly (which can just happen over time, so think about it, how old is your home) some of the air your system is pushing through is being lost. It is just disappearing into the attic or basement or wherever your ducts are running. Not only is that making your system work harder, but it is also costing you more money because your unit is doing its job, but your air ducts are not doing theirs.
