There is no doubt that we are in the dog days of summer now. Kids are bored, moms are exhausted and counting down the seconds until school starts again and everybody is over being hot; even my dog wants to be inside all day and she loves to be out barking at invisible threats.
Times are hot and they are only getting hotter. When I come inside I want it to feel like I just walked into one of those freezer closets. I want to feel instantly refreshed and cooled off, but unfortunately that adds up to big dollars. My spouse is kind of enough to crank up the thermostat when I am not around so we save a little when I am not home, but probably not enough to balance out my need for ice to be hanging from the walls.
I know I am not the only one who wants to find ways to be a little more energy efficient while still being comfortable, although, I do realize my version of “comfortable” in the summer might be another persons’ version of a meat locker…
What we should do:
- Turn up the thermostat – even turning it up just one degree (and leaving it there) can save money on utilities, the struggle is real, I simply cannot do this. In fact, I get even hotter when I try to go to sleep so I have the a/c way low and the ceiling fan on high. The rest of my family sleeps in long sleeves and thick blankets while I sleep with arms and legs and sometimes my whole body out from under the covers. I must look for other ways to save money, but I wish you the best of luck with this one – turn it up.
- Utilize new technology within programmable thermostats – in the same spirit of turning up your thermostat a degree while you are at home, you should really crank it up while everyone is away. There are a few programmable thermostats on the market that allow you to have remote access and control your thermostat via your smartphone. This is awesome when you are leaving town (or have left town) and you leave your thermostat on meat locker mode. Just pick the app that lets you increase the temp and then lower it again while you are on your way back home. That is making life a little easier!
- Change your filter – a clean filter helps the unit run smoothly so change it often and you will save energy cost on your unit not having to overwork to do its job. Also, walk through your home with some caulk and fill in any areas you notice where air is escaping around doors and windows to the outside. For me, this would be the front door that my children leave wide open constantly so a tube of caulk won’t help me.
No one likes the high cost of cooling off, but no one wants to be hot either so any little bit that helps us save on energy cost is well worth it.
