Our household plumbing is something we often ignore until there is something truly wrong and we can no longer avoid it. So, to help you help your plumbing continue to flow smoothly there are few things you need to remember…
The Do’s and Don’ts of Plumbing
DO be very, very careful about what you put down your garbage disposal if you have one. For example, DON’T put cornhusk, celery and onionskins down your disposal; they can get tangled around the blades and burn the motor out. Coffee grinds and pasta are also things that should never go down a sink or a disposal.
DO run cold water at the highest pressure you can whenever you use your disposal. Using cold water will help keep all food particles solid and therefore lesson your potential for problems.
DO grind ice cubes up in your disposal. This helps keeps the blades sharp and also can help dislodge some stinky food particles. Yes, those little balls you can buy smell great, but ice cubes actually do more good.
DON’T pour various fats or cooking oils down your sink. They can build up in your pipes, even sewer pipes, and cause all kinds of blockages and back-ups ….yep… an overflowing sewer is just as gross as you imagine it would be.
DO pour a couple of gallons of boiling water down your shower/tub once a month, this help to keep hair and grease from building up in your pipes.
DON’T pour hot water down your toilet…the bowls were not made to handle scalding water and can crack. Warm water should be fine, but steer clear of pouring super hot water down your toilet – no matter what you read on the internet.
DON’T ignore leaky faucets, they can seem like small problems at first, but they can quickly turn into big problems.
