Early spring is the perfect time to service your air conditioner. You haven’t really had to use it yet, but you know pretty soon it will be running all the time. Unfortunately, it has been sitting, unused, for months and there all sorts of problems that can arise when a unit hasn’t been used in a while.
One of the biggest complaints people have when running their AC for the first time is a musty smell. Some have named this the “Dirty Sock Syndrome” and it is because dust, dirt, mold and mildew have had plenty of time to collect since it was used for the last time in the summer. Mold and mildew can easily collect in your air conditioner filter, around the evaporator coil and in your ductwork.
You are probably using the same filter you used last summer which means it has had months to collect all kinds of wonderful odors which will be blown right through your home if you don’t change it before you use your air conditioner for the first time. If a stinky house is something you are trying to avoid, CHANGE OUT THE FILTER.
You also want to call a professional to service your A/C before you start running it. Over half of all A/C repair calls are caused by things a regular clean-up and maintenance check would have avoided. Cleaning the condenser coils not only gets rid of all the dirt and dust around them, but it also reduces the wear and tear on your system and improves its efficiency. Everything runs better when it is not covered up in months (or years) of grime.
