Ever wonder how important an EnergyGuide Label is? Well, the good news is, it is not completely and totally misleading like some other labels we check out, such as the ones on food. Are you with me there? I look at something – think it might look like something I would enjoy eating, read the label and think “it doesn’t seem too bad for me” only to discover the info on the label is for “5 chips” or “1 teaspoon” of something. Who wants to eat just that? I won’t pretend that I don’t really need to stop at 1 teaspoon of ice cream because I do. I seriously, seriously do, but I am probably not going to so I need the label to tell me exactly what something really is or what something really means to me. If the ice cream box said “3 big heaping scoops = this” then I could totally relate to that.
This is exactly what an EnergyGuide Label does and they are on all sorts of things now. It is a requirement of the U.S. government that manufacturer’s affix the label to a variety of products so that consumers can compare the energy use of similar appliances before buying. The EnergyGuide Label helps you compare the estimated yearly operating cost based on the products electricity usage and the national average cost of energy. An estimated yearly electricity use tells consumers how much electricity the appliances they are perusing will use in a year based on typical use. If you multiply this by the electricity rate on your utility bill you can figure out your estimated operating cost.
Now, for me, that is a little like figuring how much of a particular exercise I will have to do to burn off that 1 teaspoon of ice cream (or 3 big heaping scoops), but I appreciate the information and the opportunity to do a real life math problem. All in all, it is a great little label that tells you what that shiny new appliance can do for you and how much savings-potential it has for you in the long run.
