In life, things generally fall into two categories – the expected and the unexpected. For instance, you expect to replace your tires after putting a certain amount of miles on them, but you do not expect to suddenly have a flat tire while driving down the interstate. Plumbing can be the same way. You can expect to have a leaky faucet or a toilet that runs every now and then just due to normal wear and tear, but rarely does one expect to have the drain line to the washing machine back up.
This summer you can protect yourself against the unexpected category and one of the first ways to go about it starts with the washing machine drain line that no one seems think about.
Check the drain hose– When you stop to think about all the things that washing machines deal with each time there is a load of laundry, it’s no wonder the drain line gets clogged. Everything from dirt to food particles get washed away, including the biggest clogger-upper to any drain line – HAIR. Not only can the drainpipe become clogged, which can quickly turn into a disaster, but it can also crack and leak every time it is being used. Don’t let this mess be a surprise to you, check the lines to your washing machine and make sure everything is working properly. If it is not and you do not want to tackle the job yourself, call a professional plumber.
Inspect outdoor plumbing– Outdoor plumbing gets a raw deal. It is abused by the elements in the winter and it is used almost constantly in the spring and summer with sprinklers, slip ‘n slides, pools, etc. Take a good look at it and see what needs some attention. If you notice a muddy or soft spot in your yard that has no reason to be there, it may an underground leak. If you notice rusted above ground plumbing that looks like it shouldn’t work, but it does, that is a pretty good sign that it shouldn’t work and needs to be replaced. What’s above ground is a good clue as to what is below ground.
If you don’t know what you are looking at when you walk around and “inspect” things, it is really not going to help you.
