Live In an Igloo? No Heat Pump for You!
Ever wonder if a heat pump is right for you? Heat pumps are best suited for regions with moderate heating and cooling needs and can offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners.
There are several different types of heat pumps available, but the most common is the Air-Source heat pump. Heat Pumps use electricity to move heat from cool spaces to warm spaces, which in turn, makes cool spaces even cooler and warm spaces even warmer. When it is warm outside and you need to cool your home, a heat pump moves the warm air from inside your home to the outside. When you need to warm your home, a heat pump moves warm air from the cold outside to inside your home. This makes them highly energy efficient because they are just moving air and not generating warm or cold air.
If you are concerned that this method may not be enough to warm your home on really cold days, you may be right. While high-efficiency heat pumps do a better job of dehumidifying and using less energy to cool in the summer months than a standard central air conditioner, their efficiency drops when the temperatures do as well. This makes them a little less suitable for cold climates. What does this mean? If you live in the North Pole or in an igloo, then a heat pump is not right for you.
