Every now and then it is a good idea to just check in with your household habits and see how they affect the environment and what you could possibly do differently. There are many, many things you (& me, DEFINITELY me…) could do to help out the environment and fortunately for us a lot of them will save us money too.
Don’t let the water run while brushing your teeth or washing your face – we have all been guilty of this at least once in our life especially as kids. I actually like the sound of running water, but that doesn’t mean I need to enjoy it from my bathroom. The EPA estimates that a family of four uses 400 hundred gallons of water every day – EVERY DAY. That can really add up. So, shorten those showers (again, I am so guilty, who doesn’t love a nice long hot shower) or just take a bath, scrape your food off your plate before putting it in the dishwasher – don’t rinse it and repair all the leaks in your home. A leaky toilet can waste around 200 gallons of water a day, not to mention what it will do to your water and sewer bill.
Turn off ( or even better – UNPLUG) your appliances when you leave the room – This one seems to be something I am good at for a little while and then I slowly taper off until I quit doing it all together. I can remember to turn off the lights when I leave the room and unplug things like a hairdryer, but then I leave the toaster plugged in all day, even if I only use it twice a week. Believe it or not that toaster and all of the lamps you have plugged in and ready to use in rooms you don’t even go in are using energy unnecessarily.
Take care of your heating and cooling appliances – There is a lot to be said for feeling comfortable so I am not one to say you should go to extremes and not use your air conditioner or furnace to regulate the temperature in your home, but it is important to maintain this equipment. You need to have leaky air conditioning and refrigeration systems repaired. Change your filters every few months and for added ways to save on energy cost in your home make sure you have the appropriate amount of insulation throughout your house and also insulate your water heater and pipes.
Each of us live such busy lives it can really be difficult to focus on making decisions that are beneficial to us, our families and the planet, but since this is the only environment we are going to live in it is definitely worth it.
