As kids are getting out of school for winter break, many people are hitting the road for family vacations or to visit relatives. This is a prime time of year to make sure your home is extra safe whether you are home or away. Unfortunately, we live in a world where people will take whatever they can get, and seize whatever small window they may have, to steal from someone else. So, while this is the season of good tidings and cheer, it is also the season to take extra measures on safety. Here are some Holiday Home Safety tips:
If you are heading out of town do NOT announce it on social media. It is so easy to put out a quick “off to see the family in XYZ for the weekend” and guess what? Not only did you just tell your friends and family that you will not be home, but also anyone else who happens to see it. Not a good plan. Post your trip pictures after you return home.
Tell the police and trusted neighbors about your travel plans so they are aware that no one should be at your home. If you have a pet sitter that will be coming and going, let them know that as well. The police usually want the make, model and tag number of any car that should be at your residence. Also, enlist a friend or neighbor to collect your mail, papers thrown in your yard and any packages that may be delivered after you leave. These items piling up outside your home are a major tip-off that you are not there.
Many people have the urge to close all their curtains and blinds to prevent anyone from being able to see in, but you should resist the urge to do this. Leave your curtains and blinds just as you always have them. Setting some lights on timers throughout your home will also be a big help. Leaving lights on throughout the whole night is not only costly, but also probably out of the ordinary. So set timers on lamps to go on and off at different times.
Make sure you wrap your pipes and have someone that can turn on a little water if it is a night your pipes are likely to freeze. Lastly, spread the joyfulness and cheer. If you can help someone, do it. If you can be Santa to a child in need, then do it. Life is short and hard and we all need a little goodwill and love every now and then.
