At Carmine’s Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning we know there are certain living areas such as apartments, older homes and additions to existing homes that aren’t always the right fit for central air conditioning. A lot of times people will just install ceiling fans and hope it is enough. While ceiling fans are a great addition to helping us feel cooler in the summer they are not always enough to keep us from sweltering so let’s look at the other two options available for keeping cool – a window unit and a ductless mini split system.
I can’t tell you which one is right for you, but I may be able to help you figure out which will work best in your space.
Ductless Mini-Split System
Appearance – these units are available in several slim and stylish options and can be mounted high on your wall so it is not in your direct eyesight.
Installation & Cost – On top of their cost (which can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars) you will also have to have it professionally installed. The professional will have to drill a hole through your home so the air handler can connect with the compressor that is mounted outdoors.
Efficiency – This is hands-down the most efficient unit. They are even more efficient than central air units because they will not lose any cold air to window and ducts.
Appearance – Well, what can I say? We all know what these look like and they haven’t updated their look much since I was kid and my grandfather used a window unit to cool “the back of the house”. If you are looking for a unit that is big, bulky and not at all aesthetically pleasing, I do believe you have found yourself a winner.
Installation & Cost – This is pretty straight forward and what makes a window unit appealing. You buy the unit, that’s it. You may need to talk some friends into helping you, but you do not need to pay a professional to install it. So, if you are a renter and the homeowner doesn’t want their home altered, this is the way to go. Plus, they usually end up being 5 to 10 times cheaper than a ductless mini-split system.
Efficiency – Not efficient AT ALL. It is incredibly difficult to properly seal a window unit, so hot, humid air will get in and some of your warm air will also slip out during the winter.
