Snow makes everything look prettier and it invokes a bit of childhood fun in everyone when there is an abundance of it. Life size snow families and watching kids (and some adults too) fly down hills on whatever they can get their hands on will never get old, but when the snow starts to melt away so do some of its more enduring qualities.
With melting snow, there is always the potential of damage to your home, so here at Carmine’s we want to offer you a few simple tips to protect your home:
Make sure you keep your gutters clean – If gutters are in disrepair or clogged from dirt, leaves, snow or even ice, you have the potential for water to creep into your home, especially in a basement. You never want water to drain next to your home; you want the down spouts to carry it several feet away to an area that drains well. Try to remove any snow buildup on the roof and icicles from the eaves to keep snow from draining near your foundation, which can cause erosion.
Remove Snow Piles – Just move the snow away from your house for the same reason you want to keep your gutters clean – you want to protect the ground around your foundation from erosion and keep your basement dry.
Have a Sump Pump installed – Do not be leery of the sump pump; it is a wonderful investment that will save your basement from invading water whether it is from rain or melting snow. Not only does it pump out water that has accumulated, but it also serves to clear out moisture that has gathered over years. No need to remind anyone that moisture leads to mold and mold leads to all things bad so a sump pump is a wonderful solution to water/moisture problems.
