Life Stages of a Mom….
This Sunday is Mother’s Day and while some things are a universal sign of appreciation (like flowers, cards and her favorite dessert) what a mother really wants depends on the stage of life she is in with children.
The Totally in Love Stage – first time Moms with a baby to hold will love something totally centered around that sweet new soul. Buy her a family photo session or a baby photo shoot and if you have already had one have a photo blown up and put in a beautiful frame. Take her out to dinner or let her stay in her pajamas while you get take out and handle bedtime for everyone else.
The Leave Me Alone Stage – Moms with young children want peace and quiet time. They do not want to spend the day preparing a big meal, cleaning up everybody, doing laundry, changing diapers and living life the same way they did yesterday and every day before that. They just want to be left alone. Just for a day or even a few hours. Send her to the Spa with some other mom friends or with her own mother. Let her spend the day having her nails done, going to a movie in the middle of the day with no screaming kids and then out to dinner without a single child to tend to. It sounds just dreamy…
The Stop Growing Up Stage – these sweet moms have children who can do things for themselves, spend much of their time on their own or at various activities and just not home much. Buy her something completely frivolous like an expensive handbag or sunglasses that she has been coveting but would never buy herself. This Mom still makes plenty of meals so make sure the kitchen is closed on Mother’s Day and take her out to dinner with the whole family so she can see all of their lovely faces.
The Empty Nest Stage – This mom wants her family home! She may miss the days of preparing a big meal and having her family sitting around her table. If she feels the pull to make dinner herself, let her, but clean up the kitchen for her – it is Mother’s Day after all.
Regardless of the stage the women in your life are in the main thing to remember is that they want to feel loved and appreciated. It would be nice if they felt that way every day, but sometimes, with the hustle of everyday life, I bet they don’t.
