Everything bites the dust at some point in time and we are usually left wondering how we missed the signs so we could prepare a little better. When we are without something that we use in everyday life, it can really be challenging and downright not fun at all.
Since our plumbing can’t talk to us in a way we would easily understand, we have to learn to look for signs that it is on its last leg and needing to be replaced. The good thing is, plumbing gives us lots of warnings that it needs help, starting with…
Slow moving drains – This is a common source of frustration for homeowners. I can’t think of a single person that wants to be standing in the water they are showering in, they would much prefer it to immediately wash away down the drain. Unfortunately, clogged drains can cause all sorts of trouble. If it is a sink or shower you may be able to remedy the situation yourself, but if it is your main sewer line, it is definitely time to call in the professionals.
Discolored Water – Discolored water will get people upset pretty quickly (and with good reason), but sometimes it is as simple a fix as needing a new water heater. Other times it is a sign that there is a more serious problem such as rust, copper, lead or zinc in your pipes.
Bad Smells – If it smells bad – it is bad. You should not smell rotten eggs when you enter your bathroom, if you do, call for help – there is trouble in your sewer. Other smells could be a sign that your pipes have mold or bacteria in them.
Rattling Pipes – This could be a sign of a few different things, but the most common is a loose pipe somewhere or water pressure that is too high; both of these are fairly easy to fix. The important thing is to not put off the repair because they can cause more damage when left alone.
