You know how it goes; a homeowner’s work is never done. So after talking about all the things to do to get the outside of your home ready for Fall and Winter now it is time to go over a few things to do on the inside of your home.
First, and foremost, have your furnace inspected by a professional. Remember, it has not run since last Winter and there are many things that may need a tune-up in order for it to run efficiently.
Switch your fans so they turn clockwise – this way they will blow the warm air down to you instead of taking it up to the ceiling. I will confess I am not very good about doing this one. Even when it is cold outside and I have the heat going, I still love for my fan to blow cool air on me at night. I prefer to be snuggled under warm blankets with cool air whirling around me – I just sleep better this way. Hmmm…maybe I should take up sleeping outside…
Clean your humidifiers!! I know, I know, it is not a job anyone enjoys, but if you are not cleaning them and changing their filters you are just putting spores and bacteria into the air you breathe every time you turn them on. Yuck.
Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are working properly. Go on and change the batteries in them. Half of all home fires in the U.S. occur between December and February and that is a tragedy best avoided if at all possible.
