First things first, you need to clean. I know, big eye rolls all around. I am not a big fan of taking the time to clean either, but for real, get all the dust out of your house. Dust it, vacuum it, mop it, eat it…no, don’t eat it – just get it out.
Now, here is the fun part that may drive every member of your family bananas and will take some training for others for sure – have everyone remove their shoes before entering your home. This is not currently in practice at my house yet. I am still gearing up for it, but I know people who do this and their house is hands down cleaner than mine. They also have way less kids trashing the place so maybe that is helpful, but we will say it is the removing of shoes.
After you get all the dust out, you need to make sure you have a healthy level of humidity in your home. Mold and dust mites love moisture so you want to keep your humidity level around 30% to 50%. This helps keep them under control. You may need to use a dehumidifier to achieve this goal. Also, make sure you do not over-water your houseplants and fix all leaky plumbing situations so you do not encourage mold to grow.
This is a no-brainer, but make sure your home is a no smoking zone and get all things that emit a fragrance out of your home. If you can smell it, even if it smells good, it is also putting gases into your air. So breathe easy naturally – and smell good naturally. If a home is clean, well vented, not smoked in and/or not perfumed to the hilt, its natural aroma should be fine. Unless you are just stinky people, then I don’t know what to tell you to do. Maybe you need to wash some clothes; old wet bathing suits and sweaty socks can stink up a room in a second.
And people, for the love of everything good and clean in this world, if you have mold growing around the ceiling and walls in your bathroom because it is not vented or you fail to turn on the vent or the vent is broken and you haven’t repaired it yet, please get some Clorox and spray it down. That’s all you need to do – you don’t even have to scrub it. It will do all the work for you.
