Now that we are officially into summer there is no avoiding turning on your air conditioner. Hopefully, it will keep right on working just as it is supposed to without any complications, but then, things rarely continue through time just as they are. There is a saying that bad luck happens in sets of 3’s, I don’t know who has that luck but I want to trade with them because bad luck seems to happen in 10’s to me. Fortunately, you don’t have to leave whether or not your a/c runs smoothly to luck alone; there are 3 main reasons why you may have problems this summer and I don’t mind sharing them with you:
- Maintenance History – If you maintain your HVAC system twice a year little problems will be caught and corrected early on so you will have much less to worry about when you need it to heat and cool your home and your utility bills will remain at a level you are familiar with. When something is wrong inside your unit and it has to work harder to cool your home, your utility bill will start inching up. That’s not luck, that is math.
- Refrigerant Leaks – When you notice that you are lowering your thermostat, but your home is not cooling off the reason can typically be found with the refrigerant. Air conditioners cool your home by removing heat from the air and cycling refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units. If you have refrigerant leaking out the unit is not able to cool as it is intended to do and you may be left with warm air blowing around. Or at least, warmer air than you really want.
- Electrical Problems- This is a biggie because worn out, corroded wires and connections are pretty common and the result is a unit that is not working properly. If you notice a burning smell when your system comes on you could have electrical wires overheating. If you think that sounds like some bad luck brewing you are correct. Call for repairs pronto.
