A terrible, awful, no good kind of thing happened this week and it happened to me. Well, my to house really, but also to me. Our basement toilet backed up. The house is old. The pipes are old. The teenage boy that lives in the basement is not old. He is a human goat when it comes to the amount of food he consumes in a day, so I don’t even want to imagine what that means in terms of the amount of waste his body must produce in a day, but alas – I have a basement full of sewage water to give me a clearer picture. It came up through the little shower and flooded the basement. ALL OF THE BASEMENT. His bedroom, the den area and the playroom were all affected. My office, which happens to be a tile floor – not the carpet that is everywhere else- was the only room spared.
So, after 6 hours of work by plumbers, cameras, equipment and I don’t even know what else, a call to my insurance company and their call to a clean up crew my basement is now naked. Which, in a sense, is way better than it was before – which was disgusting. I actually threw away the shoes I had on while walking, I mean squishing, around in the mess trying to decide if I could clean this up on my own. There were just not enough towels in the world for that mess. I refuse to throw away the jeans I had on. I like those jeans, they are good jeans so the bacteria will just have to come off of them and yes – they actually did get wet. YUCK!!!
I am still stunned by all of this. Maybe next week, I will write a “How to Avoid a Sewage Flooded Basement” article, but for now it’s a one-thing-at-a-time kind of day. I am only dealing with clean-up.
