There are little things everyone does now and then that are bad for their home, especially their plumbing. You probably think you are an exception, but I bet not. Here are three common things that mean you are about to call a plumber:
- Treating your garbage disposal as a trash can. You cannot put whatever you want down your garbage disposal. People think that because it is part of some type of food that makes it okay. The most common things that will make the blades stop turning and clog your disposal are: watermelon rinds, pumpkin carvings, potato peelings and pasta. Do yourself a big favor and make sure your family knows what causes the most problems and either compost everything or throw it in the garbage can. It is also very helpful to run a few cubes of ice through your disposal every now and then just to clean off anything that may be stuck on them and keep the blades sharp.
- Placing weight on your shower head – I know they make all kinds of fancy hanging shower baskets these days, but it is really not good for your shower head. The more people that have to share a bathroom, the more storage is needed in the bathroom and shower so people hang these up to help create room and stay organized. The problem is that your shower heads are not made to hold the weight of heavy shampoo and body wash bottles. The weight from the basket could make your shower head snap off or be pulled right out of the wall.
- Yanking on a faucet handle – any time there is a little drip from a faucet the homeowner’s first response to pull on it or twist it as tight as they can. This does not solve the problem. It will not stop a leak or correct a chronic drip, but it may make your problem even worse.
If you don’t want to see us it is best to steer clear of doing any of these things, but if you do already have an annoying drip from a faucet give Carmine’s a call today and let us repair it before it turns into something more. To schedule an appointment, call 203-791-8089.
