HAPPY 4th of JULY!!! As most of you know today is when we celebrate our countries independence from Great Britain. It is our custom to celebrate with parades, picnics, family gatherings and of course, FIREWORKS! I really cannot imagine celebrating the 4th without watching the fireworks. I know many people like to do their own little firework shows, but I much prefer to leave that to the professionals and watch the sky explode in beautiful colors from the safety of my camping chair.
While I thoroughly enjoy the “bombs bursting in air” every year, we have a furry friend who does not. Thankfully, there are few things we can do to help comfort our furry friends while we are away enjoying the show. If you know your dog or cat has a noise phobia try to make a secure area for them and put them in it before any fireworks go off since once they start it may be harder to find your animal. A small familiar place like a bathroom with their bedding, some water and a toy the like may help to comfort them. You can also turn on the TV (or other noise they are use to) and close the curtain and blinds in your home to help minimize the amount of noise they are actually exposed to. Also, if possible, leave a light on for them. Everything is less scary to everyone when they can see what is in front of them.
If you are going to be at home with them just make sure they are in the room with you before the celebrations begin and they should be even more comfortable. If you have an outside pet and there is just no way you are going to let them inside your home. Consider putting them in a crate, or at least in your garage. If that is also not possible, make sure you have a collar with tags on them as it is very likely scared animals will bolt.
