There are many, many things on the market these days that say “flushable” including baby wipes, adult “bottom wipes”, toilet bowl cleaning pads and women’s sanitary items, just to name a few. But not all of these items break down like toilet paper and many of them end up either stopping up your own toilet or household plumbing or causing problems for your municipal sewer systems.
Either way it is bad news and the problem is probably not going away anytime soon. Even worse are the products that look just like the “flushable” products, but are not. I have a friend who usually buys the flushable toilet bowl cleaning pads, but on one occasion bought the wrong ones and was not aware of what she had done until her toilet backed-up and flooded her bathroom.
Many municipal sewer systems are spending thousands and thousands of dollars trying to update their systems, install screens, and taking measures to preemptively go out and unplug some residential pumps each week. This all adds up to raising your sewer rates, which nobody likes.
Since some products that say “flushable” do not actually break-down properly and other products look flushable but are absolutely not, the safest thing to do is to only flush toilet paper and what comes out of your body. That’s it, nothing else.
Of course, most of us have had the moment in life where a child has flushed something that is definitely not “flushable” and in those cases give Carmine’s a call at 203-791-8089. We are happy to help you during these moments and will have your plumbing working again in no time.
