One of the most embarrassing things is for a toilet to clog, especially if it happens during a gathering, whether you are a guest in someone’s home or the host, this is a situation no one wants to deal with. There are many reasons why toilets clog, but most all of them are completely preventable so you can avoid the embarrassment and inconvenience of a bathroom being out of commission.
Flushing Inappropriate Things
There are only two things that should ever be flushed down a toilet – human waste and toilet paper. Do not flush feminine hygiene products, cat litter, “flushable” wipes & toilet bowl cleaners, regular wipes, diapers, etc. The list of things to avoid flushing is endless really, but the list of things you can flush never changes – human waste and toilet paper (reasonable amounts at a time).
A Jam in the Trap
There is a u-shaped bend in the pipe that is always filled with water; this is called the trap. It is there as an important barrier against your home and foul odors from a sewer or septic tank, but it is also a convenient place for things to get stuck. This is a place where even the two things you are allowed to flush can get stuck if there is too much trying to pass at one time. Be considerate of the trap.
Low Flow Toilets
People have a love/hate relationship with these. Environmentally conscious people want them, but the first ones did not have very much flushing power. If you have one of the first versions and are continuously having trouble, the newer low flow toilets are considerably better. It may time to upgrade.
Sometimes the trouble is up, not down. Instead of the clog being in the drainpipe, it could be in the vent. In general plumbing fixtures will vent to the roof so fresh air is allowed into the system. If it becomes clogged with leaves or other debris, your toilet may make a gurgling sound or be slow to drain. This should always be handled by a professional.
While there are even more reasons than these that would help a toilet become clogged, at Carmine’s our professionals are here to assist you with all your plumbing needs.
