Your indoor air quality is something to think about from time to time especially if you have a home built in the last 40 years. Newer homes are more “weather tight” than older homes, which is great for keeping warm air out and cold in or vice versa, but it is not great for getting pollutants out of your home.
In fact, it can actually make the air you are breathing inside your home far more toxic than any outdoor air you breathe. Several different things can cause indoor air problems including inadequate ventilation and high temperature and humidity problems.
So what are these pollutants and how long can they affect you? Well, just about everything is polluting your air – seriously – almost everything. The typical things on the list are oil, gas, kerosene, coal, wood, asbestos, mold, carbon monoxide, etc. but there are also things you do not typically think about that can remain in the air as a pollutant for a long time like cleaning supplies. Yep! If you like to walk into your home and be knocked down by the smell of certain cleaning supplies – while yes, it does mean your home has been cleaned and maybe even sterilized it is not good for you to breathe those chemicals in for long periods of time. Air fresheners, some types of furniture (like pressed wood products) and even some types of fabrics can emit pollutants continuously for long periods of time also.
So what can you do about it? You need to make sure you have proper ventilation throughout your home and if you use humidifiers or de-humidifiers make sure you take care of them properly. If you are using them, but never give them the attention they need they will start to do more harm than good.
Be smart about your hobbies – for example if you love to re-finish old furniture make sure you are either outside or in a very well ventilated area before you use any chemicals to strip the furniture and then paint or stain it.
