Fact vs. Fiction
There are myths abound when it comes to dealing with your heating and cooling system and it is our job to set the record straight. Some were created because people have a natural fear of being taken advantage of or in other words – being sold something they do not actually need. Others have arisen mainly due to laziness or lack of time.
Fiction: Maintenance Contracts are a waste of your hard earned money.
Fact: Heating and Cooling systems are complex pieces of equipment with lots of different components that need to work properly in order for it to work efficiently. Regular maintenance is a must to keep everything in working order and to be able to spot and repair minor issues before they become major problems. It is the same principle as having the oil changed in your car – this is necessary for your car to run effectively. The biggest difference is that your car dings relentlessly when your oil needs changing and it is up to you to remember to have your system serviced.
Fiction: Changing Filters is all the maintenance that is needed.
Fact: While changing your filter is critical to maintaining the proper airflow through your system, there are many other things that need to be done regularly as well. For instance, the blower needs to be cleaned and inspected and in some cases may need to be lubed. Burners should be adjusted and cleaned, and so on.
Fiction: It’s best to always go with the company who quotes the lowest price.
Fact: While I understand the natural instinct we all have to save when and where we can, this is not always the best place to do so. When dealing with contractors and products price is usually a good indicator of quality. Energy efficient equipment cost more, quality trained service people cost more, etc. Always check with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) before hiring a contractor and ask your friends and neighbors for references. Don’t be fooled by an advertised price…many times it is just a way to get your attention with hidden cost built in.
These are just three of many myths that we could cover. It is important to really do your research instead of just assuming you already know the answer – I don’t know about you, but I know lots of people who assume they know everything without ever asking a single question. While I confess to being guilty of that from time to time too, I definitely ask more questions than I use to and jump to far less conclusions on my own.
