Don’t be like Grandma, turn your heat on!
I was getting ready to write this blog about tax credits and how they affect us (yes, indeed, yawn…..) when I spoke with my grandmother from Mississippi and I asked her, she mentions to me that she hopes no one comes to visit her this weekend because, “it is supposed to get cold and I don’t want to turn my heat on.” WHAT?! Did your jaw drop open because mine did! Now granted, this is a whole other part of the country and “cold” has a whole different meaning. “Cold” this weekend is apparently lows in the 30’s and warming to mid-50’s, but still, I am such a fan of a warm and toasty home, I am a bit stunned. I wanted to scream, “Turn your heat on!”
My grandmother and I have very little, if anything, in common and this just drove the point home. She is going to walk around her house with several layers of clothes on, probably a hat or two, and maybe even sleep under some electric blankets (doing much more good for the environment and her pocket book than me). Dare you ask what I am going to do? Even more so, dare I tell you?
I am going to crank that heat up to a lovely 70 degrees, walk around my house in a regular amount of clothes and when I crawl under my covers to sleep, I will do so with the fan on just in case I get too hot. Environmentalist, go ahead, let me have it… I know all the things I am doing wrong, but hey, I recycle, that should give me some brownie points. All you creatures of comfort out there… you know my way is better! I have to be uncomfortable in so many other areas of my life; I just don’t want to be uncomfortable at home. I don’t see the point in it.
