Do you know what is coming up? Have you seen it all over the stores, in the commercials, shoved in your face everywhere except maybe the hardware store? That’s right. It’s a males most dreaded holiday…Valentine’s Day.
Most males I know intensely dislike Valentine’s Day, seeing it as a pointless holiday made up in order to get them to spend money. I highly suspect that the “pressure” of Valentine’s Day is what really does them in. They know they are supposed to be romantic but without a clue as to how to go about it. So, they get a card, a box of chocolates and maybe even some flowers and call it a day. Truthfully, I too feel this is just fine.
Most women I know feel pretty okay about this gesture as well. No need to go really over the top with anything, except maybe once every 5 to 10 years an over the top gesture would be fun and appreciated. As a child my parents left me a box of chocolates in my bathroom every Valentine’s Day. I have no idea why they left it in my bathroom, but I enjoyed the chocolate!
Interesting Facts about “V” day:
- Approximately 150 million cards are exchanged each year on Valentine’s Day. This makes it second only to Christmas.
- Women purchase about 85% of all Valentine’s. (This really shocked me! I thought it would be about even.)
- Despite the fact that over 36 million boxes of heart shaped chocolate will be sold – Valentine’s Day ranks 4th in holiday candy sales after Halloween, Easter and Christmas.
Truly, I think Valentine’s Day is just a good reminder to say “I Love You” and do a little something for your partner in life. Sometimes we are so busy with kids and work we take our significant other for granted. So while, yes, Valentine’s Day has become very commercial (like every other holiday we have) it doesn’t have to be ignored or get terribly expensive. There is never a bad time to show a little acknowledgement of your love and affection for another person.
